A crater discovered on the internet.

In 2024 amateur astronomer Joël Lapointe was planning a camping trip in Quebec. He was looking for a good spot on satellite maps online. Suddenly he noticed a strange large circle in the forest. Lapointe thought that it might be a crater from a meteorite.

The crater is located in the eastern part of Quebec. It lies near Lake Marsal. The crater measures a full 25 kilometres. It dates back about 390 million years. At that time there were not yet any dinosaurs on Earth.

In October 2025 a team of geologists went into the field. The team was led by Professor Gordon Osinski from Canada. There the scientists found special rocks in the shape of cones. Such rocks form only in a very powerful impact by a meteorite.

This is the eleventh known crater in Quebec. About 200 such craters are known on Earth. In September NASA published a satellite image of the crater.
