Bosnia and Herzegovina is electing a new government.

There will be general elections in BiH on 4 October. Citizens will elect a total of 518 officials. About 3.4 million people have the right to vote.

BiH has a very complex political system. The state is led by a presidency with three members. One member is a Bosniak, one a Croat and one a Serb. The country also has two parts: the Federation and Republika Srpska. This system was created by the peace agreement of 1995.

These elections also have an important new feature. For the first time scanners for the ballots are used. Voters are checked with biometric devices. The state bought 6,000 scanners and 6,000 devices. The aim is to prevent fraud in voting.

The election campaign lasts until 3 October in the morning. Analysts say that ethnic divisions dominate the campaign. Little is said about the economy, schools and the EU.
