The UN is looking for a new Secretary-General.

Since 2017 the UN has been led by António Guterres from Portugal. His second term ends at the end of 2026. Who will replace him in January 2027?

First the Security Council in New York decides. Representatives of 15 countries sit on the council. Five of them have the right of veto. These are the US, China, Russia, France and the United Kingdom. Then all 193 members of the UN decide.

Seven candidates are competing for the post, among them four women. So far no woman has led the UN. Many countries want that to change at last.

On 18 September there was a third vote in the council. Rebeca Grynspan from Costa Rica got the most votes. Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett from Guyana came second. Michelle Bachelet from Chile got little support and gave up. The race is still going on and new votes are expected.
