The Asian Games are taking place in Japan.

On 19 September the Asian Games began in Nagoya. The Games last until 4 October. Japan is the host for the third time in history. Earlier the Games were held in Tokyo in 1958 and in Hiroshima in 1994. Over 10,000 athletes from 45 countries are taking part. They compete in 43 sports. There are also new sports, such as padel, surfing and mixed martial arts.

Japanese Emperor Naruhito officially opened the Games. The ceremony was held at a large stadium in Nagoya.

This time there is no village for the athletes, in order to save money. About 4,000 people sleep on a big ship. The ship measures a full 290 metres. About 2,000 others live in wooden huts.

Some athletes complain about the conditions. Tall basketball players from South Korea do not have enough room in their beds. Heavy rain also caused problems and delays.
